‘I had written for years, but never shown anyone’: How playwright Ciara Smyth found her voice

When the first coronavirus lockdown came into effect, the playwright Ciara Elizabeth Smyth had just moved from Portobello in Dublin to Belfast to be with her partner, who had convinced her to stay because of the disparity in rent.

”I never knew I could afford to live in a house with a garden before that,” Smyth laughs quietly at a table in the Betelnut Café, the in-house coffee shop at the Civic Theatre in Tallaght.
