Book review: Penance goes for the jugular of true crime fandom

Clark’s tour de force of a novel encourages us to question every real life crime book and documentary we’ve ever consumed

Eliza Clark: hits the mark perfectly. The book that we read is written by a fictional, disgraced journalist called Alec Z Carelli. Picture: Robin Christian

Eliza Clark’s debut novel Boy Parts hit the shelves in 2020, just as BookTok – the community of readers who make short-form videos on TikTok – was taking off.

The provocative story of a young woman who takes photographs of men in sexually humiliating poses was a cult hit on the platform. This follow-up tackles true crime media, right-wing seaside communities, unreliable narrators and the torture and murder of a teenage girl by her classmates.
