On a bright January morning I’m taking tea with two Lissadell gardeners: Klaus Laitenberger, who is masterminding Lissadell’s 21st-century restoration, and long-retired Paddy Mitchell, who worked at Lissadell from 1933 to 1939.
Mitchell’s memory is crystal clear, from which plant was in which pocket of the alpine garden, to how the gravel paths were raked every Friday in preparation for weekend visitors.
