The country’s most senior civil servants will have their performance rated for the first time, under a new reform plan.

There are 35,000 civil servants in the country who have responsibility overall for €53 billion of public spending each year.

Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin said that the performance of secretaries-general - the heads of government departments -would be assessed by a new civil service accountability board.
