The government has abandoned its promise to meet the UN target on aid spending to developing countries by next year.

The government has abandoned its promise to meet the UN target on aid spending to developing countries by next year.

There had been a commitment in the Programme for Government to increase foreign aid to 0.7 per cent of gross national product by 2015.

The country is currently spending €602 million this year on its aid budget, but it would have to increase this to an estimated €946 million to meet the UN target next year.
