Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald has set up a review of the scheme which has left victims of crime waiting years for compensation.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation scheme is due to pay out around €4.2 million this year to victims who suffered financial losses due to violent crime.

It also covers people such as gardaí, firefighters and prison officers who suffered losses while trying to prevent a crime or save somebody’s life.
