The former Portuguese colony of Macau, now under Chinese control, is a vibrant fusion of ancient tradition and modern development, writes Isabel Conway.

An anxious, sharp-suited executive has joined the throng of humanity worshipping at the ornate temple. Laying down his briefcase and his smartphone, he takes his place in a sea of chanting, joss stick-waving worshippers. Most are wrapped in flimsy plastic capes to protect them from the fierce deluge of rain - a July typhoon alert has just been sounded in the South China Sea.
