Divorce special: Minister can’t divorce herself from reality

With marital breakdowns on the rise, there’s an urgent need to reform the system, writes Kieron Wood.

The new Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, has many difficult tasks ahead of her, but arguably few are as important as reform of the family law system.

According to the most recent census, the number of divorced people in Ireland more than doubled in the previous ten years – and is still rising. There were 87,770 divorced individuals living in Ireland in 2011: 49,685 women and 38,085 men.
