The electorate have used the Dáil by-elections to send a clear message to the government and the two main opposition parties.

The fact that two anti-water charge campaigners got almost 60 per cent of the vote in Dublin South-West shows the level of hostility to the meter rollout.

This should be good news for Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil, but both parties will be re-thinking their strategies ahead of the general election.
