A political deal on a polarising issue

The truth is that Irish people remain deeply conflicted on the issue of abortion.

The draft heads of the government's abortion legislation, published last week after intensive debate between the two parties at cabinet level, is about as good a compromise as was achievable in the circumstances.

Labour has achieved its goal in proposing legislation that will give effect to the right of women whose lives are in danger during pregnancy, including those in danger by their own hand, to end their pregnancy in their own country.
