In 1968, William Anders, an astronaut aboard the Apollo 8 spacecraft, took a photograph of the earth as it appeared to rise over the surface of the moon. He took it on a whim; he just thought it was pretty. But the picture, known as Earthrise, became a catalyst for the then-burgeoning environmental movement.
