Brain injury patients denied specialist care
Patients with brain injuries are being denied quick access to emergency neurosurgical care due to a shortage of specialist neurosurgical beds.
Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and Cork University Hospital are unable to accept all patients who suffer a brain haemorrhage and are referred for emergency treatment in a timely fashion.
Without quick treatment, the patients are at higher risk of suffering a second brain bleed that can prove fatal.
Beaumont and CUH are the only hospitals in Ireland that can provide the necessary care, but have a dire shortage of beds.
