Time to employ a more flexible approach to carers in the workplace

One in nine people in the Irish workforce are caring for a family member often unknown to their employer, but a new initiative is about to change this, writes Siobhán Maguire

More than 355,000 people in Ireland are carers, with some 210,000 of these in full- or part-time employment while caring for a loved one at the same time. This group of people are often termed ‘working carers’ and are part of the hidden army who underpin Ireland’s health service to the tune of €10 billion per year and constitute a significant proportion of the country’s ‘social capital’.
