Lights, camera, action: Galway Film Fleadh is bigger than ever at 30

The Galway Film Fleadh brings an estimated economic benefit of nearly €7 million to the city

Out of a backdrop of frustration at the lack of opportunity for Irish filmmakers to exhibit their work to their peers grew a small festival known as the Galway Film Fleadh. It was 1989, and organisers felt compelled to showcase the abundance of talent among filmmakers in the west, as well as giving Galway’s art hungry audiences a choice of thought-provoking film beyond that of the city’s two cinemas.
