The new ‘vaccine pass’ system is likely to create numerous problems for publicans but, as they wearily acknowledge, it’s better than being closed up

Jim Dunne would know most of his customers rather well. He’s been in the Pearse Street area of Dublin for over 30 years now, and at the helm of the Padraig Pearse pub for about 17 of them. His staff and customers are all locals too.

The rules around indoor hospitality, including social distancing requirements, time limits, limited opening hours and a ban on live music, pose two problems for Dunne: policing and turnover.
