Solving sewage treatment problem problems

The need to safely and effectively treat sewage is an issue that never goes away, hence the need for increasingly innovative solutions

Large Blivet installed on a campsite on the coast of Brittany to provide temporary sewage treatment

“Ireland has a problem where many of the country’s municipal sewage treatment plants are organically overloaded and cannot accept any more sewage pending upgrades,” explained Tommy Butler, Sales Director, BMS. “Many of these are in urban locations where there is high demand for housing. The consequence of this is that many housing and commercial developments are being put on hold or abandoned altogether, despite the huge demand nationally in Ireland for increased housing provision.

“Butler Manufacturing Services (BMS) Ltd has the solution in the form of its class-leading BMS Blivet Package Sewage Treatment System, which is fully manufactured and designed in Ireland and has been exported to 50+ countries worldwide over 35+ years from its ISO 9001 factory based just outside Longford.”

BMS has worked with a number of engineers and developers to design temporary sewage treatment solutions, which will treat the sewage generated at any particular site to a stipulated discharge standard. Following this, it can then be accepted into the municipal sewer as the overloading is often organic (it does not have the capacity to treat the polluting component of the sewage) rather than hydraulic (capacity to deal with the flow itself) or indeed discharged or even reused!

BMS Blivet Installed in Centre Parcs Longford

The BMS Marketing and R&D director says their innovative product is not only efficient but is also cost-efficient and easy to both install and run.

“The Blivet is a high quality, extremely compact, ‘plug and play’ package sewage treatment system (plant) designed for populations from 20-5000 of full time residents or Population Equivalents (PE),” he said. “It is a completely prefabricated portable system that is delivered ‘ready to go’ with minimal civil works and is suitable for permanent, temporary or emergency use. This means that it is rapidly deployable and when delivered to site can be up and running in a matter of hours. It needs very little civil works to install, just a concrete slab underneath and then connect the inlet and outlet pipes and electricity to the integral panel. It is even able to be installed fully above or partially/fully below ground without a concrete surround. Furthermore, not only is the Blivet easy to install but it has a very low cost of ownership due to its very low maintenance, power and spare parts requirement and is designed for a lifespan in excess of 30 years.”

According to Butler there are other specific reasons why the BMS Blivet is an ideal solution to deal with untreated sewage discharges or enable development.

“As a temporary sewage treatment solution, it is a fully portable system that can be easily removed by reversing the installation steps, lifted onto the back of truck and could be providing sewage treatment at another site in a matter of days.”

Butler says that another popular feature of the product is that, as a completely self-contained modular system, the Blivet can be added as housing is completed, helping to spread the cost. This feature also means that hire purchase/ease finance is available.

“A number of housing and office developments have already proceeded with the BMS Blivet solution and others have received planning or are going through the planning process in Irish locations such as Arklow, Midleton, and Edenderry. In addition, the system is overseas in projects as diverse as housing projects in the UK to camping sites in France.
