Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) claims the lives of 436,000 people in the United States each year, with more than 350,000 events occurring outside the hospital.

To protect those at risk of SCA, wearable medical device company Kestra introduced the ASSURE Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD).

Kestra has deep expertise in the development of Class III therapeutic medical devices, but the company sought advanced cloud and mobile application development resources to help build the next-generation digital healthcare platform it envisioned.

Kestra partnered with digital engineering specialist GlobalLogic, a Hitachi Group Company, to design a data-enabled, connected solution – the ASSURE Cardiac Recovery System.

It includes the ASSURE WCD, the ASSURE patient app, and the Kestra CareStation remote patient data platform, all working together as a digital healthcare system to support and protect at-risk cardiac patients.

The ASSURE system does not require action from the patient or bystanders to provide a lifesaving intervention. Worn outside the body, the WCD continuously monitors and automatically detects abnormal heart rhythms. If necessary, the system can autonomously deliver a therapeutic defibrillation shock to restore the heart’s normal rhythm.

The ASSURE patient app automatically transmits data to the remote data platform. Activity and usage data encourages patients to engage in their own recovery and more readily return to everyday life.

Meanwhile, the Kestra CareStation data platform enables clinicians to access patient data and gain valuable insights into heart rhythms, trends, and patient compliance.

To ensure regulatory specifications were met, Kestra leveraged GlobalLogic’s expertise in designing integrated systems to comply with medical device software standards and FDA quality requirements.

The company also benefitted from GlobalLogic’s cloud and mobile app developer resources, as well as its strong design experience, to create a state-of-the-art system that puts the patient first. The solution has already benefitted thousands of cardiac patients.

Nitesh Banga, president and chief executive of GlobalLogic, said: “As a Kestra partner of nearly a decade, we’re excited to continue to support their work in evolving the product line, as well as scaling and extending into new geographies to deliver more life-saving technologies to more people.”

GlobalLogic recently acquired Sidero, an Irish-based cloud and software development specialist, to further expand GlobalLogic’s engineering, architecture and cloud software development capabilities, as well as its European footprint.
