Long before Dundalk’s artificial surface was realised, Thurles was affectionately known as “Ireland’s only all-weather track”.

The racecourse, situated quite near Semple Stadium, has long shown a remarkable capacity to withstand the worst of Irish weather. As well as being Ireland’s most-used track for jumps, it frequently stages schooling races – quite lucrative events for the course in which horses take part in practice events effectively behind closed doors.
