Irish Times ‘testing the waters’

Restricted online access will only affect the newspaper’s ‘heavy users’, says managing director Liam Kavanagh.

As the Irish Times prepares to launch a metered paywall on its website tomorrow, its managing director, Liam Kavanagh, is quite clear: “This is the start of something rather than the end of something.”

Kavanagh said that the paywall is “not a question of creeping up on the customer and saying, ‘Gotcha, you’ve moved over the meter, now you’re a paying customer’”.
