Imagine if this year were different: if sporting officials dropped their hypocrisy, if superstars started campaigning for the homeless, if Mayo stormed to an historic All-Ireland victory. You never know, some of it might happen...

On the first day of 2018, a film on an in-flight entertainment system unfortunately caught the eye. Called ‘Win!’, it documented the birth and opening season of New York City FC and inadvertently gave an insight into what high-level soccer was becoming. David Villa’s teenage-style surliness at times stood out, but what one took away from the film was unease over how oil money led to the creation of a massively artificial club as well as the business terminology that underpinned its plans for growth.
