‘Her big toe got us to the World Cup’: Amber Barrett leading Ireland’s hopes in Australia

The striker scored the goal that secured World Cup qualification but had to battle back from injury and the heartbreak of Creeslough to book a seat on the plane

In October last year, Amber Barrett wrote herself into Irish football history.

Scoring the winning goal against Scotland at Hampden Park, she secured Ireland’s first ever qualification for the Women’s World Cup.

Speaking last week after Vera Pauw announced her 23-woman squad for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand later this month, Chloe Mustaki summed up Barrett’s role.

“Her big toe got us to the World Cup,” Mustaki said.
