In 2019, the Irish crime novelists Liz Nugent and Jane Casey attended a literary festival and were approached by an elderly man who asked, “Have you ever met a murderer?” When they replied in the negative, he told them, “You have met one now.”

By then Nugent had already recognised Malcolm Macarthur, the eccentric bohemian who 37 years previously had killed two people and then finally been arrested in the Attorney General’s apartment.
