After journeying along Clew Bay in Mayo for the first time in 1842, William Thackeray described the stretch of water as presenting “the most beautiful view I ever saw in the world”. Carts and horses were heading back from Westport market, and the islands beyond seemed dressed in gold and crimson as the sun began to set.
