Vincent Boland: Xi Jinping’s New Era risks dragging China back into the economic wilderness

The Chinese president is likely to be in power for another five years, possibly indefinitely. His record as paramount leader of an increasingly inward-looking regime does not bode well for China in dealing with the challenges it faces

An exhibition called ‘Forging Ahead in the New Era’ opened at the end of September in central Beijing. It presents China’s achievements since Xi Jinping became general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and paramount leader of the country in 2012. The show matters so much to Xi that he gave his fellow politburo members a tour of it recently, presumably to remind them who’s boss.
