Shane Coleman: Fine Gael’s reason to be fearful is a lack of direction, not exiting TDs

Fine Gael urgently needs to remind itself, and the electorate, what it stands for or it will be overtaken by parties that have clearer, stronger messaging

Reasons to be fearful, part 7. Charlie Flanagan’s revelation last week that he would be the seventh Fine Gael TD not to contest the next election (eight if we include Eoghan Murphy who quit politics in 2021) has prompted a predictable round of ‘FG crisis’ headlines.

With speculation of more to follow, comparisons are being made with 2011 when so many Fianna Fáil TDs (and ministers) departed the scene in advance of its electoral meltdown.
