John Walsh: With democracy under threat, stranglehold of big tech on media must be broken

If the European Commission fails to tax Google and Meta and the other tech giants, the government should consider unilaterally imposing a levy

The focus may have been on the crisis engulfing RTÉ over the past year, but the news during the week that Mediahuis plans to lay off one-tenth of its workforce underlines the threat facing the wider media.

Last September, the Irish Times Group, which also publishes the Irish Examiner, announced that it was embarking on a voluntary redundancy programme. The Journal.ie is struggling to generate sufficient income streams and News Ireland, the publisher of the Irish editions of the Sunday Times and the Sun has significantly reduced its footprint over the past few years.
