Editorial: Thuggish city centre attacks demand radical action – and more police

Our capital must not be allowed to become a playground for the lawless, threatening unprovoked violence on tourists and residents alike

There has rightly been an outraged reaction to the violent assault on an American tourist on the streets of Dublin in recent days. He has been left with life-changing injuries.

The attack has rightly been condemned by politicians at local and national level, and swift justice for those responsible must be forthcoming.

Such unprovoked violence within yards of the city’s largest police station tells its own story as to how safe our streets are.
