Editorial: Despite healthy state of public finances, cost of living remains a problem

Michael McGrath, who is not prone to overstatements or outlandish pronouncements, has been accused by some of using the cover of inflated corporation tax receipts to mask his own loose handling of the public finances

The comments from Michael McGrath, the finance minister, to the Business Post today that the country’s finances will end 2023 on a positive note are not to be easily discounted.

Before November’s rally in terms of corporation tax receipts, we saw a fragility in the public finances which had not been present for several years.

The economy slipping into recession, technical or otherwise, reflects those underlying strains.
