Editorial: Dáil term gets off to bad start as armchair warriors wind up the rhetoric
The debate over the Israel-Hamas war descended into chaos last week and the chamber was suspended
Language matters in the public arena. The words we use when we talk about controversial or sensitive topics such as migration or the Israel-Hamas war or the housing crisis are important, and so is the tone we use. Without civility and restraint, debate becomes a deafening and pointless shouting match.
There was a spectacular example of this breakdown in civility and restraint in the Dáil last week as TDs returned after the Christmas recess.
