The government has published a new five-year science plan, Innovation 2020, which aims to double investment in research and development to more than €5 billion a year by 2020.
The strategy aims to increase total R&D investment to 2.5 per cent of GNP (gross national product) by doubling spending by the private and public sector from the €2.9 billion recorded in 2014.
