Ireland fined €2.5m and facing daily penalties for not adopting audio-visual directive

State accepts sanctions, which are due to establishing the new media regulator Coimisiún na Meán

The directive governs EU-wide coordination of national legislation on all audiovisual media — traditional TV broadcasts and on-demand services

Ireland has been fined €2.5 million and faces a daily penalty of up to €10,000 from today for failing to transpose an EU directive into law.

The deadline for adopting the Audiovisual Media Services Directive was September 2020 but Ireland, along with Czechia, Romania, Slovakia and Spain, has failed to incorporate it into national law.

The directive governs EU-wide coordination of national legislation on all audiovisual media — traditional TV broadcasts and on-demand services.
