Meta was recently handed a €1.2 billion fine by the Data Protection Commission

In May of this year, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) made headlines around the world by handing down a €1.2 billion fine to Meta. This all stemmed back to a legal challenge brought by Max Schrems, an Austrian privacy campaigner, over an issue highlighted by Edward Snowden, the whistleblower. The assertion was that European Facebook users’ data is not sufficiently protected from US intelligence agencies when it’s transferred from Europe to America.
