Helen Dixon, the Irish data protection commissioner whose office has been accused of dragging its feet in investigating Big Tech companies such as Meta, has blamed “clunky” European Union procedures for wasting energy, time and money.

Dixon, who’s about to step down the role to take up a new position with ComReg, has forced firms to cough up about €2.8 billion ($3.1 billion) for violating the EU’s landmark General Data Protection Regulation.
