That Katherine Maher is to step down as chief executive of Web Summit after three months is both surprising and yet not a surprise at all.

There had been rumours ever since her hasty appointment that Maher was only stepping in as chief executive on a temporary basis. She will stay on as a non-executive chair of Web Summit, so she isn’t cutting her ties completely with the company.

The talk was that Paddy Cosgrave, Web Summit’s co-founder and former chief executive, would want to return to the role once the controversy about his comments on Israel had blown over.
