Varadkar considering top-up child benefit payment on means-tested basis

Proposal would support the poorest 100,000 children in the state at a cost of €700 million

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has promised to examine the introduction of a child benefit top up payment for poorer families.

The current child benefit payment of €140 per month is given without a means test to 1.2 million children under 18.
