Surveyors secure €750,000 in funding to assess derelict farmhouses

Feasibility grants for vacant housing will cover fees for expert advice on costs involved in restoration

Brigid Browne, chartered building surveyor: ‘We are in the midst of a housing crisis, so by restoring buildings we can supply much-needed accommodation’

Chartered surveyors have succeeded in getting government grants to survey derelict farmhouses for potential refurbishment.

Many farmhouses around the country are lying in a derelict state after the passing of the owners, with their children often living in new homes nearby.

The grant will be used to cover the costs of assessing how much work has to be done on walls, ceilings and roofs to make the former homes suitable for living in again.
