RedC Poll finds public would support move to decriminalise drugs

Ahead of a new citizens’ assembly, 50 per cent of adults polled think no one should be prosecuted for carrying any drug for personal use

Results of a RedC poll suggest that a sizeable section of the population is open to the decriminalisation of drugs for personal use

A majority of adults support decriminalisation of all drugs ahead of the setting up of the new citizens’ assembly on drugs, according to the latest Business Post/RedC poll.

Decriminalisation would mean that people would not be prosecuted for being caught in possession of small amounts of drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and heroin for personal use. But the sale and supply of larger amounts of drugs and drug use itself would remain illegal.
