Red C poll: Majority of voters want asylum seekers processed outside of Europe

A substantial portion of Sinn Féin voters changed their mind on the issue after party leadership made their position clear

Of those polled, 56 per cent said they would support European proposals to process asylum seekers in third party countries

A majority of voters would like to see asylum seekers processed in third countries outside of Europe before being granted entry, according to the latest Business Post/Red C poll.

Of those polled, 56 per cent said they would support European proposals to process asylum seekers in third party countries before entry into Ireland, while 17 per cent said they wouldn’t. 18 per cent were neutral on the question.

The question was asked after the Irish government opted-in to the EU migration and asylum pact, which will facilitate countries to do bilateral deals with third countries to process asylum seekers. It is a similar system to the UK’s controversial Rwanda policy.
