Overpaid by €3m: the civil servants who collect welfare overpayments
Total of 1,361 cases of excessive payments to Varadkar’s department
Civil servants responsible for collecting overpayments made to welfare recipients were themselves overpaid by €3 million last year.
Overpayments to staff in the Department of Social Protection, which is responsible for pursuing people who have been overpaid social welfare benefits, more than doubled last year from €1.2 million in 2014 to €3 million.
In total, there were 1,361 cases of overpayments to staff in Minister Leo Varadkar’s department, which employs over 6,700 people. ...
