The government is planning to introduce new building rules to reduce the cost of student accommodation.

There have been 5,300 new student bed units delivered in the past six years, with an average size of 30 square meters each.

But there have been complaints from students’ unions that the cost of new purpose-built student accommodation is unaffordable for many students, with rents of up to €1,800 per month.
