Tánaiste Micheál Martin has warned that the prospect of getting the Defence Forces up to 11,500 personnel is “well off” despite new recruitment funding in yesterday’s Budget.

There is funding to recruit 400 new troops next year, which would bring the Defence Forces up from about 8,000 now to 8,400 next year. But that is still well below its officially approved target of 9,500 troops and the government’s ambition of 11,500 by 2028.
