Michael McGrath interview: ‘We’ll help a business to survive, but only if it’s viable’

Minister for finance accepts government is putting new costs on businesses but says that it can’t keep providing exceptional measures ahead of Budget 2025

Michael McGrath: “Exactly how far I’ll be able to go will depend on what is the envelope for the tax package. There will be other areas of taxation where I’d like to introduce changes as well.” Picture: Fergal Phillips

At Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, Michael McGrath and Paschal Donohoe put a shot across the bows of their government colleagues: keep a closer eye on spending or face the consequences on budget day.

The following day, in his office on the ground floor of the Department of Finance, the typically measured McGrath backed his colleague in public expenditure but denied the warning was aimed at any one department.

“I supported [Donohoe] about the need for discipline and respecting the parameters of the budget. The problem shouldn’t be overstated in terms of spending versus profile,” the finance minister told the Business Post.
