Ireland has highest plastic waste per head in EU and one of lowest recycling rates
The latest Eurostat figures for 2020 show waste of 61kg per capita is nearly double the EU average at of 34kg per capita
Ireland is continuing to produce the highest plastic packaging waste per head in the EU, while having one of the lowest recycling rates.
It comes as the Department of Environment has warned that EU 2025 recycling targets may not be reached, as the “relentless production of plastic packaging could swamp the gains we are making in recycling volumes”.
