Harris in Brussels today for first foreign engagement as taoiseach

The trip will be seen as a show of EU solidarity as it comes just days after he was elected

Simon Harris: ‘Ireland’s position in Europe is vital to our economic and social success’.

Simon Harris arrives in Brussels today for his first in-person foreign engagement as taoiseach in what is being seen as a show of EU solidarity.

While in the Belgian capital, he will meet Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission president, and Roberta Metsola, European Parliament president, both members of the European People’s Party, Fine Gael’s EU umbrella group.

Metsola was one of the first EU officials to congratulate Harris on his appointment as taoiseach on Tuesday, tweeting — in Irish — that she was looking forward to working with him ahead of the European elections in June.
