MEP for Ireland South joins Frances Fitzgerald as party’s second European representative to announce they will not run again

Clune follows a number of Fine Gael veterans to announce their retirement in recent months, including Frances Fitzgerald, Richard Bruton, Charlie Flanagan, Michael Creed, and David Stanton.

Deirdre Clune, the Fine Gael MEP for Ireland South, has announced she is retiring from frontline politics becoming the latest of her party’s members to stand down.

In a statement this afternoon, Clune said that she had informed Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar she would not contest next year’s European election.
