Fergus O’Dowd has confirmed he will not contest the next general election, becoming the latest in a raft of Fine Gael TDs to retire from the Dáil.

The veteran politician - who served in the Louth and East Meath constituency - has a public representative for over 50 years.

In that time, he has held a number of senior positions on the Fine Gael frontbench and is a former Senator and Mayor of Drogheda.
