Minister expects divorce vote to be followed by speedy legislation
The apparent result of the referendum, after the tallies, means that all future issues regarding the divorce will be decided by the Dáil through legislation rather than by the people through constitutional amendment
Around 1,300 people separated annually will now have the right to a faster divorce after the expected passage of the referendum by an overwhelming majority.
The divorce referendum asked people to vote on two proposals: shortening the length of time people should live apart before they can be granted a divorce, and making the recognition of foreign divorces explicit in the Constitution.
