When Michael Creed announced his intention last week not to contest the next election, it didn’t come as a surprise to many in Fine Gael.

Creed has been rumoured for some time to be one of several Fine Gael TDs who would not seek re-election. But that didn’t take the sting out of having to publicly acknowledge the loss of a party veteran, and poll topper in Cork North-West.
