The cabinet has approved the appointment of Séamas Ó Concheanainn as the new Irish language commissioner.

The Coimisinéir Teanga is responsible for ensuring that public bodies make their services available in Irish as well as in English.

Last year, 600 members of the public complained to the Coimisinéir Teanga about public bodies failing to comply with their obligations under the Official Languages Act.
