The best-kept secret in Irish politics was that Bertie Ahern had quietly rejoined Fianna Fáil at the end of last year.

The man who led the party to three successive general election victories before he was forced to resign his membership following the Mahon Tribunal’s report, had sent in his application to rejoin just before the Christmas holidays.
